Campus Helsingborg is developing and the Department of Strategic Communication is part of the process

The Department of Strategic Communication is one of many units to be involved in developing Campus Helsingborg thanks to a Lund University investment of SEK 35 million. At the launch on 16 April, there was great enthusiasm from researchers, employees and collaboration partners who will be working together on the new initiatives.

The Strategic platform for political communication initiative is developing a meeting place for collaboration on education and research in political communication at Campus Helsingborg. New courses have been promised and the ambition is to develop a study programme in political communication.

Our society is marked by the fundamental transformation of information and communication. In a hybrid-media reality, knowledge about the use of information and communication to inform and influence people will become completely essential. Now Lund University is gathering its forces within this field at Campus Helsingborg!

“Social Information and Hybrid Power – A Strategic Platform for Political Communication” is a collaboration initiative between teaching staff and researchers from the Department of Strategic Communication, the Department of Media and Communication, the Department of Political Science and the Centre for European Studies for the development of courses, research projects and engagement with wider society on political communication in a broad sense. “As early as this autumn, we hope to be able to organise an initial interdisciplinary workshop for students”, says Nils Gustafsson, the project manager. A media lab for students will also be established at Campus Helsingborg. The investment amounts to SEK five million and will be ongoing from 2019 to 2023.

“We will establish the Media Lab, an interactive learning environment in which teaching staff, researchers and students can meet. Lund University lacks flexible environments where both students and staff can record audio and video. And there is already interest from organisations beyond the University, such as IKEA, to collaborate within the framework of this investment”, says Andreas Mattsson, researcher at the Department of Media and Communication and director of the BA in Journalism.

The Strategic Communication: Behavioural Data Analysis initiative involves developing a new specialisation within the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in strategic communication. The goal is also to develop a one-year international Master’s programme in the field.

“The initiative reduces the gap between us and competitors such as the Oxford Internet Institute – Oxford, here we come! Everyone is talking about big data and machine learning, but we link it to strategic communication. The new specialisation is located on the interface between fields such as data analysis, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and strategic communication. We also include the professional perspective – how does it actually work in real life?” says Howard Nothhaft, senior lecturer in strategic communication.
