Karvan Shahabi

Former student at the Masters programme in Strategic Communication

Karvan

Graduated year:

2017

Current Position/Organization:

I work as communication specialist at Santa Maria. Santa Maria is owned by the Finnish family company Paulig Group.

Why did you choose to study the Master’s programme in Strategic Communication at Lund University?

The programme offered a combination of an academic base and at the same time a clear co-operation with the enterprise sector. I found this combination not only attractive, but also necessary to be well prepared for a future in communication. For me it is not only enterprise or academic understanding that is necessary to be successful – it it both. As this programme offered just this it was the obvious choice.

What is the best part of this programme and why?

The variation in how the exams was carried out. During the two years I have, thanks to that variation, been better in presentation technique, dealing with crisises, argumentation, rethoric and much more. As the work as a communicator usually is varied and demands different skills in different contexts it is also necessary to feel confident in these contexts.

In what way have your studies changed on how you look upon Strategic Communication practice?

I have bigger understanding of the impact of strategic communication has, both on society in general but also on each organization. With this comes big possibilities and risks in the role as communicator. To be able to handle this kind of possibilities and risks makes the role exciting, important and central. Before I commenced my studies I didn’t have the same understanding on how much impact strategic communication really has.

How has the program helped you to pursue a career in the communication industry?

It has of course played a decisive role in the start of my career. The programme has above all made me feel confident in my work and that I can offer my organization something that would be difficult without the knowledge the programme offers. At the same time I want to emphasize the importance of attitude and personality. Everything is possible if you want to. The right attitude is important not only in your working life, but also during your time as a student.

What are your future career dreams?

At the moment I really am where I want to. I work in a fantastic organisation that offers very good career opportunities, with nice colleagues and interesting things to work with. I feel I develop every day at work.

My dream for the future is however to work with long-term and strategic issues in an international organisation. For that I need more experience and that what I intend to get.
