The geography of fear

the tourist destination in the shadow of conceptions of terror
In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there has been an increased focus on public security and the promotion of safety in place branding research and practice.

Urban destinations are particularly vulnerable targets for terrorist acts and safety is an important factor in creating equitable and sustainable cities.  In this research project, we examine constructions and experiences of public safety in the juncture of lived, planned and symbolic urban space in ten Swedish urban destinations.  Public safety is approached through a study of visitors’ experiences of safe destinations, municipal branding and communication designated to promote safety, and physical interventions in city centres to improve security.

The project runs for two years and is funded by the R&D Fund of the Swedish Tourism & Hospitality Industry (BFUF).
