Why did you choose Lund University and the Master's Programme in Strategic Communication?

I frankly chose Lund University because of this Master’s Programme in Strategic Communication. Regarding the choice of this latter, the reason is rooted in my constant passion and curiosity for Strategic Communication and related fields, especially in international contexts. Therefore, this specific programme turned out to be the perfect match for my needs, by combining my passion for Corporate Communication as a whole and my international vocation. Moreover, the respective Department is the largest research unit throughout all of Sweden, which is a worthy aspect I took into consideration.

Beyond the Programme itself, catalysts such as the reputation of Lund University, its facilities, services and the student life supported by the Student Nations' culture strove me to choose this University. So far, I have no regrets and I am proud of my choice.

What is the best thing about your programme?

As far as I am concerned, the best thing about this Programme is represented by the unique opportunity to study in an international environment, providing me with a rich cultural experience. Indeed, half of my peers are coming from different countries besides Sweden, and the same applies to professors and teachers. I am truly delighted by this because, firstly, this was what I was personally looking and striving for, and secondly because this international and intercultural exposure consequently fosters and cultivates a global mindset, strengthening my cross-cultural communication skills and my worldview.

Furthermore, another thing I am truthfully grateful for is the combination of the aforementioned aspects with the inner nature of Strategic Communication. This latter is global per se due to today’s interconnected world, therefore the environment at issue can only offer a unique perspective on this field, chiefly supported by class discussions and group projects.

What is the biggest difference between university studies in your country and Sweden?

The biggest difference is surely the semester timeframe and study pattern. Back in my home country, it is common to simultaneously attend 4 or 5 courses for a specific amount of time, usually on a semester base, instead of one course at a time. This means that here in Sweden you are expected to carry out group and individual assignments by the end of each course, instead in Italy you usually take the exams within the scheduled exams session (where I pursued my Bachelor’s there were 3 exams sessions per year of 1 month each).

Furthermore, the expected learning outcomes highly differ between the Italian and the Swedish systems. Being the former more traditional with a greater emphasis on lectures and instructor-led teaching, it is expected to a major degree to understand and gain the imparted knowledge by professors and textbooks. On the other side instead, the Swedish system guide and foster their students to build and sharpen their analytical reflections and autonomously engage in self-directed learning, avoiding passively providing knowledge. The outcomes for each student are personal and insightful learning opportunities.

What is it like to live and study in Sweden?

I love living here! I deeply appreciate the importance given here to work-life balance and quality of life, chiefly due to the strong welfare system, the national commitment to sustainability, and the strong sense of equality and a laid-back social atmosphere. Regarding this latter, I have to admit that life as an international student is pleasant and filled with opportunities. Indeed, the welcoming and multicultural environment always ensures social interactions with other people (I have never felt alone since I moved here!), along with the enrichment of your cultural understanding. Furthermore, something I deeply appreciate at Lund University is the Student Nations and Associations, a reality that unfortunately I could not experience back in my home country. These are great gateways for making new friends, meeting local people, and always trying some new activities (e.g., hiking, yoga, soccer, etc.).

Last but not least, I love to live in Sweden for the stunning natural landscapes, which always offer numerous opportunities for outdoor activities, even with the cold and dark seasons.

Do you have any advice for students considering studying at Lund University and Campus Helsingborg?

I would strongly recommend joining at least one of the introduction activities organized by the various Student Nations/Associations at the beginning of each semester, regardless of whether you live in Lund or Helsingborg. Speaking of my personal experience, these activities have been crucial for my social life because they helped me to settle into the (new) university life, build connections, and foster a sense of community.

Moreover, I would suggest taking part in the various workshops provided by the Library of Campus Helsingborg and the LU Support Centre. These provide comprehensive and punctual academic guidance, which might be relevant for students like me coming from totally different academic backgrounds. These are also excellent opportunities for exploring the campus facilities and what the University can offer. Try not to overlook all the supports and activities LU provides for students, from the study support to the psychological help desk: these can help you and enrich your academic and extra-curricular life (I was gladly astonished by the quality and punctuality of these services).

Last recommendation, always be open to new opportunities (and be a little risk-taking!).

Do you have any favourite places in Helsingborg?

Without any doubt, my favourite place in Helsingborg is Fria Bad Beach. When the weather is good, it is lovely to go there after lectures with your peers and enjoy a bit of the sea and sun. I only have great memories of that place (and the sunset there is just breathtaking!).
