Communication Hands on! Having careers in start-ups and the dilemma of change.

lu in

On Wednesday October the 9:th we were happy to take part of VentureLab in cooperation with LU Innovation and their "Breakfast & Ideas" -concept at Mindpark, Helsingborg.

This morning our students Rebecca Arfwedson and Endang Ghani Ashfiya talked about Strategic Communication hands on. They were focusing on strategic communication in start-ups and sharing their hands on knowledge from their own experiences.

First up we listened to Rebecca working part-time with communication at Mindpark based start-up Wellbefy.

Rebecca started her academic career within Behavioural Science, following the Millienial green wave. Working within health care led Rebecca to see the major flaws in communication within the field. Partnering up with Wellbefy CEO and co-founder Sandra Jönsson, she took on the challenge of improving communication systems for organizations.

"I think that entrepreneurship is much like my personal journey, it is about not being afraid of changes. This also makes it quite hard to practice strategic communication in a start-up, where the organization's why, what and how is constantly changing.” Rebecca shared which approach she is having when dealing this dilemma of change. She is also quick by stating that we should trust our ideas and do not let them just be a dream. But make them real and take advantage of people around you to discuss business ideas and let your creativity lead your dreams. She admires her teachers at the Master’s Program for what base skills they have given her, but also the importance of meeting inspiring people at Mindpark who gave her the challenge of work in the start-up business.

We also had the opportunity to listen to Endang Ghani Ashfiya, who worked as a government relations executive in a consulting company in Indonesia before coming to Sweden. Endang is currently doing his internship at Bean Bros in a Copenhagen start-up where he is responsible for Brand Communication and PR and he could not state enough the importance of creativity and diversifying your skill sets as a strategic communications student.

"At university we learn to be scholars in this field, how to generate ideas which are relevant to the issue or project or anything we have. But in real work, there is a really big chance you also need to be creative and skilled at content writing, create image/video and use different software tools like Google Analytics, SEO, Google Ads etc." Endang says.

We left this breakfast, being totally content that our students have a great knowledge on Strategic Communication and analytical skills to be confident in their careers. Though, depending on which field you like to work within, you might also have to gain certain knowledge outside your studies.

Make you dreams possible!
